About Road Base Calculations
A strong aggregate base course (ABC) is the foundation of any paved surface. Without a properly graded and compacted base, your asphalt or concrete will fail prematurely. This calculator helps you determine exactly how much gravel, crushed stone, or road base material you need.
Why Compaction Matters
When you order road base, it arrives "loose". However, it must be compacted using a roller or vibratory plate before paving. Compaction reduces the volume of the material. A standard compaction factor is 1.3, meaning you need to order 30% more loose material to achieve your desired compacted depth.
Recommended Base Depths
- Pedestrian Walkways: 4 inches
- Residential Driveways: 6 to 8 inches (depending on subgrade soil)
- Commercial Parking Lots: 8 to 12 inches
- Heavy Truck Roads: 12+ inches
