Calculate HMA tonnage based on the industry-standard 145 lb/ft³ density.
Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) is heated to between 300°F and 350°F at the plant before being shipped to the job site. It must be laid and compacted while it is still hot. If the mix cools below roughly 185°F before rolling is complete, it will not compact properly, leading to a weak pavement structure.
The standard density used across the paving industry for estimating HMA is 145 pounds per cubic foot. While specific mix designs (like fine surface courses vs. coarse binder courses) vary slightly in specific gravity, 145 is the universal safe average used for bidding and ordering material.
