About Flagstone Calculations
Unlike poured materials, natural stone coverage varies greatly depending on the thickness of the stone and the size of the joints between them. Irregular "standup" flagstone pieces create wider joints, meaning fewer tons of stone are needed to cover the same area compared to perfectly square-cut stones with tight joints.
Why a High Waste Factor?
Natural stone is unpredictable. Pieces break during transit, and installing irregular shapes requires significant cutting and chipping to fit pieces together like a puzzle. A waste factor of 10-15% is standard for natural flagstone patios and walkways.
