About Tonnage Calculations
Knowing your exact tonnage is the critical first step for any paving project. If you order too little, you run short and the paver has to stop (leaving a cold joint that weakens the road). If you order too much, you pay for material you don't need and have to pay to dispose of it.
Why Density Matters
The standard formula uses 145 pounds per cubic foot because that is the typical compacted density of Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA). However, if you are using cold patch, warm mix, or recycled asphalt millings, the density changes. Millings, for example, are lighter (around 130 lb/ft³) because they don't contain fresh liquid asphalt binder and don't compact quite as densely.
